Pest Behaviour

The Cotton Bollworm (Helicoverpa armígera) is a lepidopteran whose biological cycle is strongly conditioned by temperature. In general, in our climate, it completes three (sometimes four) generations a year, with maximum adult flights in May, July and September.

It is a polyphagous pest and can affect crops such as tomato, cotton, corn, pepper and others such as lettuce, strawberries, legumes, tobacco and ornamental plants (carnation cultivation). A population can affect different crops simultaneously and even develop part of the cycle in spontaneous vegetation.

The main symptoms of damage are punctured fruits and damage to flowers and growth points. When the plant is small it can "blind" it by also affecting the apical bud of the stem. The wounds caused by this pest can facilitate the entry of other pathogens (fungi, bacteria, etc.)
