Pest Behaviour

The Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella) has a number of annual generations that is highly influenced by the climate, it cannot survive the winter, which generates numerous outbreaks of infestation due to migration to areas with a milder climate.

It is the main pest of cruciferous crops, being one of the most destructive due to its voracity and widely spread throughout the world thanks to its mobility.

The caterpillars feed of the leaves of the plant, first they gnaw at the outer ones and move towards the inner ones, they also cause deformations in the heads of the young inflorescences. Likewise, they cause serious indirect damage since the affected fruits are rejected due to the completely perforated and dirty leaves and the presence of larvae and pupae inside the buds.

It was the first insect to be detected resistance to DDT, it is currently considered resistant to most insecticides, including those formulated based on Bacillus thuringiensis.
